About Island Falls

Island Falls is a rural community located in Southern Aroostook County with a year-round population of approximately 750. This population doubles in the summertime as our two pristine lakes (Mattawamkeag and Pleasant) as well as the Mattawamkeag River draw visitors for some of the best fishing, boating, and kayaking in the state. Our fall foliage is spectacular, and the dark skies of the region are perfect for star gazing and nighttime photography.

Island Falls is connected to the Maine ITS for ATV and snowmobiling. All Town of Island Falls ATV trails are mixed use trails that are well maintained. These trails extend to Millinocket, Houlton, Patten and beyond.

Island Falls has many other recreational opportunities including an 18-hole golf course, camping, hunting, trapping and hiking. The River Walk trail just off I95 on Route 159 is an easy one-mile flat hike along the bank of the Mattawamkeag River.

If you enjoy history, the Tingley House Museum operated by the Island Falls Historical society should be on your list of places to visit. Located on Nina Sawyer Lane, the Tingley House features memorabilia from our rich lumbering history, Milliken Medical Center, local veterans and much more.

Bible Point Historic Site, a 27 acre point where a young President Theodore Roosevelt visited to reflect in solitude is located on the Mattawamkeag River and is accessible by boat (with a short hike) or by ATV or snowmobile.

Located on the Maine Pine Tree Trail, and US Bike Route 501, Island Falls is a short drive from Baxter State Park and Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. The Canadian border is 35 miles to the north up I95. Acadia National Park is a two-hour drive south.

Newly created in 2026, US Bike Route 501 from Fort Kent to Old Town runs through downtown Island Falls.  Have a picnic on the Community Center lawn or grab a bite to eat at one of our local restaurants on your way through!

Whether it's for snowmobiling, fishing, camping, golfing or searching for an elusive moose, we hope that you will visit Island Falls soon!
